I’m Thankful for…
November 22, 2011
This past Monday I taught a lesson to my second and third graders about what they’re thankful for because of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. We started off thinking about things we “take for granted”. I asked for a volunteer to explain what taking something for granted means and one of the boys raised his hand and said, “It’s when we forget something because it seems so normal.”
I thought what an awesome answer! I inserted “forget to appreciate”:)
So with a little collaboration we had this definition:
“take for granted”—to forget to appreciate something because it seems so normal
We brainstormed some of the things in our lives that we take for granted:
family, parents, friends, the earth, water, food, hot dogs, burritos, florescent light bulbs, electronic devices, bed, house, education, teachers, books, pets, two students wrote God, and many other thoughtful responses :)
Prepping this lesson has given me the chance to reflect on the things I take for granted but want to appreciate more.
I want to start off by saying that I’m thankful for my job at Aurora School. The teachers, staff, and children are amazing. I’m so blessed to be excited about going to work and seeing what the day will bring. Although each day has it’s own set schedule, you never really know what joys and challenges will come up. I’m thankful to be a part of the children’s learning experience and being able to help and encourage them in any way I can. I’m thankful that the children inspire me to rekindle my own love of learning. I’m thankful that the children are able to share who they are with me and that I can be who I am with them. I hope to continue to bring my enthusiasm, positive spirit, and heart to work and never take my job for granted.

There’s so much more in my life to be thankful for:
God—for His love and mercy. Knowing my heart and giving me the people and opportunities to serve and love others.
My Family—things have never been better, appreciating each other more
Inang—constant reminder of the importance of family and to never forget your roots
Friends—support, learning from each others’ different experiences and encouraging each other to reach what we want to accomplish
David—for being real, consistent, attuned
Community— ministries, groups, etc.—ability to come together with our different talents to accomplish the same goal.
